Lasius flavus (yellow meadow ant), likely as Lasius niger is a species commonly occurring in Europe and North America. You can find it on the edge of a forest or in a partially sunny places. It's hard to spot them, because the mounds they build are overgrown with grass. Also, you can meet their nests in damp places under stones. They lead the underground life and likely Lasius niger , they feed honeydew grown by aphids.
This ant moves slowly compared with other ants. It is easy for breeding. In nature the size of the colony reaches several thousands.
For feeding we advise to give a mixture of honey and water, egg yolk and small insects (eg. mealworm)
Tip for ant breeding:
In the case of the purchase of small colonies, we recommend to breed the ants in a test tube to a quantity of 12-15 workers before being released to the formicarium. Otherwise, the ants may feel lost and the colony will grow more slowly.
Ants Lasius flavus feel the best in cork formicarias (they like to drill corridors in the cork nests) or in soil formicarias (unfortunately they are hardly visible to the observer then)
